Bachelor of Science

UNM offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Statistics, with several possible concentrations within Mathematics:

• Mathematics:

  • Pure Mathematics

  • Applied Mathematics

  • Mathematics of Computation

  • Mathematics Education

• Statistics

• Data Science (currently a concentration within the Mathematics Program)

Honors Program

The Mathematics and Statistics Undergraduate Honors Program is designed to provide intensive and personal instruction for selected students. This path is recommended to those who wish to pursue graduate or professional study, as it can provide additional guidance and lead to graduating with departmental honors at commencement. Why Mathematics?

Mathematics is a fundamental field of study on the formulation and analysis of scientific theories, a rich and independent field of inquiry, and its study can provide an excellent preparation for life in our highly specialized society. Active research throughout the mathematical subdisciplines can lead to new perspectives and applications in many other fields. The Bachelor of Science in mathematics, either alone or in combination with another field of study, is excellent preparation for careers in industry, academia, and research institutes.

Why Statistics?

Statistics is the science of collecting and analyzing data. Statisticians interact with researchers in various fields of science, engineering, medicine, social science, and business to develop scientifically sound methods in those areas. Most coursework in the department is devoted to understanding current methods and the reasoning behind them. A Bachelor of Science in statistics can prepare students for careers in industry, government, academia, and research institutes.

Both Mathematics and Statistics degrees provide excellent preparation for professional or graduate programs in medicine, law, business administration, and public policy and administration.
