General Information

Program of Study

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs that lead to a M.S. or Ph.D. degree with options in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Applied Statistics. Students planning graduate studies at the University of New Mexico will find a congenial department and a faculty of international stature.

The research interests of the department encompass core areas of analysis, computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, geometry and topology, mathematical biology, mathematical physics, nonlinear systems, and probability and statistics.

Research Opportunities

Our graduate students engage in research with our faculty and faculty from other units or the National Laboratories (see also the graduate student lead  Directed Reading Program (DRP) for undergraduate students).  Much of the output of these graduate research projects can be seen in the resulting MS Thesis and PhD Dissertations of our students.  Recent theses and disertations are available online at the digital repository of UNM.

Graduate students in our department have gone on to successful careers in the mathematical sciences: in academia, industry, national laboratories, government, as teaching professionals: K12 education, colleges, and universities across the US and the world; as data analysts: working in hospitals, insurance companies and start-ups.



Research Facilities

Centennial Science and Engineering Library: this facility holds an extensive collection of book and journals.

UNM Center for Advanced Research Computing: Available to all UNM students, this center provides access to numerous high performance, multi-processor computers. AHPCC also provides a visualization and parallel computing lab with tutorials and workshops.

In-house Computing Resources: The Mathematics & Statistics Department maintains an in-house variety of server and desktop computers. We also maintain our own computing lab.

UNM Computing Resources: There are many computer pod/classrooms across campus maintained by the Information Technology Services (ITS) department of the University.


Albuquerque is famous for its favorable climate and is in a setting rich in multicultural traditions. The metropolitan Albuquerque area has a population of over half a million. The University campus lies a mile above sea level on a plateau overlooking the Rio Grande, west of the Sandia Mountains that rise to an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. Housing and other costs are at moderate levels. New Mexico is rich in culture and natural beauty.
