Famous British mathematician John Horton Conway passed on April 11

John Horton Conway famous British Mathematician,  the John von Neuman Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, at died on April 11, 2020 of COVID-19. He was active in the theory of finite groups, knot theory, number theory, combinatorial game theory and coding theory. He has also made contributions to many branches of recreational mathematics, most notably the invention of the cellular automaton called the Game of Life

Here is a 2015 article from The Guardian about his incredible life. John H. Conway gave in 1999 a memorable Lecture for the New Mexico Math Contest (now known as the UNM-PNM Statewide High School Competition). In that visit he also gave a Colloquium in the Department and a Lecture at Sandia National Labs. We filled  the DSH Auditorium style large room on the first floor. We also took him to Santa Fe to meet with Reuben Hersh. May you rest in peace dear John.
