2024-25 UNM-PNM Math Contest first round

The first round of the UNM-PNM Statewide High School Mathematics Contest took place over the weekend of November 22-25, 2025. This year about 35 middle and high schools in New Mexico participated, including schools from Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Deming, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Zuni, and Angel Fire. Close to 400 students (some home schooled)  took the first-round exam and about 60% qualified for the second round. Even those who did not qualify worked hard, and we congratulate all participants for their efforts!

The second round will take place on Saturday, February 6th, 2025, at UNM. In the morning there will be a Public Lecture by Professor Po-Shen Loh from Carnegie Mellon University, and the second-round exam will be in the afternoon. This year the organizers are professors Stephen Lau and Cristina Pereyra. High school student Sean Choi,  the overall winner of both the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 contests, served as coach for this year's student participants. Sean held in-person problem sessions in Albuquerque and Los Alamos prior to the first-round exam, and afterwards an online session to review solutions to the first-round problems. The contest is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNM and by a generous contribution from PNM. Please visit the contest webpage for more information.
