Singularities from nilpotent Frobenius actions

 Abstract: One salient difference that algebraic geometry either enjoys or suffers from is that the basic spaces of interest are often not like manifolds. Instead, singularities play a key feature and have long been considered as an area of research in and of themselves. In this talk, we will survey some recent directions concerning a type of singularity which is defined by Frobenius acting on cohomology supported at the singularity formally introduced in 2015 by Takagi and Srinivas. The surprising turn is that we will be interested in these actions being nilpotent and that these types of singularities mysteriously have connections to ordinary reduction; a purely arithmetic property, as well as Hodge theory. We will assume no prior knowledge of these topics. In the last part of the talk, I'll provide work in progress with K. Maddox which gives new constructions of these singularities.
